about

This recording was made during the first “dip” in the COVID-19 pandemic with both musicians having not played music with anyone for the prior three months. This forced hiatus resulted in a fresh and zesty musical encounter and was also the very first time the two had improvised together. In retrospect, the session presents as a wide-ranging, non- referential textural and rhythmic exploration of acoustic percussion and low-fi electronic sound.

Hamilton and Coulter both approach the improvised setting with similar instrumentariums based on drum sets augmented with various percussion instruments, found objects, and electronics, including an unusual shared interest in radios as musical instruments. Hamilton here is distinguished by lower drum tunings, and Coulter with higher drum tunings (also his frequent use of friction and vibrators to activate objects). At times the two are quite distinct and at others they meld into a single, indistinguishable sound world.

SEAN HAMILTON is an experimental percussionist, composer, and improviser currently based in western Colorado. His work primarily focuses on creating musical structures and opportunities that blend composed elements with improvisation, taking influence from avant-garde and experimental music, free improvisation, electro-acoustic music, noise, and sound art. Sean has performed throughout the United States and in Europe and has also presented guest lectures and clinics at various universities in the United States and United Kingdom. In addition to his creative practice, Sean is an audio engineer specializing in live sound production. He holds a Master of Music degree from the University of South Florida and a BM from Slippery Rock University. He is proud to perform exclusively with Innovative Percussion implements and Grover Pro Percussion.

RON COULTER is a percussionist, composer, and improviser. He has toured internationally appearing in 49 U.S. states, Europe, Canada, and Japan with artists such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Vinny Golia, David Murray, Matthew Shipp, Sean Jones, Hugh Ragin, Linux Laptop Orchestra, Nate Wooley, Bolokada Condé, Chris Corsano, Music from China, Tony Malaby, Wyoming Symphony, and Tone Road Ramblers, among others. Ron has presented work at numerous conferences including: ISIM, PASIC, NIME, BMC3, a.pe.ri.od.ic, Futurisms, Soundlines, RadiaLx, VU Symposia, and the JVC and Montreal Jazz Festivals. He co-founded the Percussion Art Ensemble, Drm&Gtr, duende entendre, SeFa LoCo, and founded the SiiS, WyExSs, and Creative Music Series. Additional interests include noise, intermedia, interdisciplinary collaboration, and organizing Fluxconcerts. Ron has created 400+ compositions for various media.
